Day 1 ARRIVAL NEGOMBO
Your journey of a lifetime begins in Negombo. Arrive at the Bandaranaike International Airport, where you’ll be met by the representative and transferred to the hotel. After check in, spend the rest of the day at leisure immersing in Sri Lanka’s top holiday destination.
Few places on the island combine culture, history and escapism to such dazzling effect as charming Negombo – the sprawling and vibrant beach town. The roar of life begins at dawn as huge wooden catamarans, powered by the wind in their sails make their way back to the shore. Bill Crosby’s song “Red Sails in the Sunset” could easily have been inspired by such a romantic scene. The small port contrasts with the Dutch canal, establishing the town as an important commercial centre. On this journey you will scratch the surface and discover a land sprinkled with the dazzling gems of Sri Lanka’s legacy.
OVERNIGHT IN NEGOMBO
Day 2 NEGOMBO – PINNAWALA - SIGIRIY
After breakfast, you will start your adventure by driving to the medieval capital of Sigiriya (Lion Rock). Your stop along the way is equally spectacular with a visit to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage.
Pinnawala is unique as it is the only established elephant orphanage in the world to have a nursery for young elephants. Established in 1975 by the Wildlife Department, the park is also a captive breeding ground for wild Asian elephants, through which more than twenty five elephants have been born since 1984. Here you see these beauties splashing around in the river or lifting their trunks in delight, as they suckle on bottles of milk. Also included is lunch at a restaurant in the stunning village of Pinnawala.
Continue to Dambulla to visit the Dambulla Cave Temple to observe the five caves dating back to the 1st century BC, Buddhist murals and more than 150 Buddha statues. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most impressive complexes in Sri Lanka. Continue to Sigiriya for hotel check-in.
Day 3 SIGIRIYA - MINNERIYA
After breakfast, travel in a jeep safari vehicle on your morning drive to Minneriya National Park. The park is famous for being the best place in Sri Lanka to get close to free-ranging elephants. Bordering the Minneriya tank and the Giritale tank, the 7,529 hectare park attracts hundreds of elephants during the dry season, as surrounding water source dries up. Watching them travel in herds of 10 to 20, it is impossible not to be impressed with the sheer bulk of a fully grown adult, but equally spectacular is seeing how they interact. There is also a host of water birds, both large and small, so keep your eyes open for delicately hued storks, slender and elegant grey herons, and great white pelicans.
Want to try something traditional and completely different? A delightful evening bullock cart ride is just the ticket, which will take you to some of the nicest places on the island. It’s pretty unconventional and definitely an adventure. Riding in the shade of the forests, you will see the country’s historic sites and some of the lovely scenery as well. What makes this ride exceptional is that you will visit a Sri Lankan village and enjoy a cookery demonstration and home-cooked meal from the local women and then top it off with a canoe ride across a beautiful lake! This tour will make your holiday that much more unforgettable!
OVERNIGHT IN SIGIRIYA
Day 4 SIGIRIYA – MATALE – KANDY
After breakfast, explore the Lion Rock fortress soaring above the jungle like a prehistoric island. The complex was built by King Kashyapa after killing his father and stealing the throne from his brother. It was here in 477 AD where Kashyapa held court and oversaw excessive architectural projects until he was defeated by his brother’s army in 495 AD. Once guarded by a giant sculpted lion, today only its paws lay in the jungle like the “vast and trunkless legs” of Ozymandias. Walk up the steps to the palace to behold the remarkable frescoes and the wall once decorated by a large mirror.
Travelling further south to Kandy, stroll through the Matale Spice Gardens to see the different types of flavours the island is famous for and how they are grown. Lunch and a cookery demonstration at the Spice Garden will make you appreciate just what a feast for the senses Sri Lanka can be.
A drive from Matale will bring you to Kandy – the second largest city in Sri Lanka. Kandy is the last capital of the Sri Lankan monarchy which fell to the British in 1815 after defying the Portuguese and Dutch for three centuries. It is listed as a world heritage site by UNESCO and known for the golden roofed temple “Sri Dalada Maligawa”. Your evening sightseeing will include a drive around Kandy Lake and a visit to the Temple of the Tooth that safe keeps Lord Buddha’s Tooth Relic. After you will enjoy a Sri Lankan show and watch the local dances. Return to the hotel.
OVERNIGHT IN KANDY
Day 5 KANDY – NUWARA ELIYA
After breakfast, proceed to Nanu Oya station for an unforgettable train ride to Nuwara Eliya. Sit back in the comfort of the air-conditioned train, where every seat has its own picture window, so you can catch jaw-dropping views as the train powers up through the tea plantations, into the clouds and then weaves in and out of the many mountain tunnels. The railway in Sri Lanka was first introduced by the British Colonial government in 1864, to transport tea from places like Nuwara Eliya to the capital, Colombo.
Nuwara Eliya is a city tucked away within the hill country of the Central Province. The town is renowned for its lush tea plantations, waterfalls, red-roofed English country style houses, a golf course and a manmade lake. Nuwara Eliya is nicked named “Little England” because it was established by the British in the 1840s as a base for the colonists and still retains some distinctive English features, like the red post box and the Queen’s Cottage. Check into your hotel.
OVERNIGHT IN NUWARA ELIYA
Day 6 NUWARA ELIYA
After breakfast, enjoy a relaxing day at leisure. Feel free to trek the stunning Victoria Park with its swathes of pristine lawn, beautiful ornamental gardens and heavily wooded interiors. Alternatively, take a stroll through New Bazaar Street, the centre of modern Nuwara Eliya with its procession of shops and markets. See the Tamils dressed up like English farm labourers in padded jackets and woolly hats, carting around heaps of vegetables – one of the town’s characteristic sights.
OVERNIGHT IN NUWARA ELIYA
Day 7 NUWARA ELIYA – KOGGALA
After breakfast, travel through the twisting roads of a tea plantation and factory where you will see the women, mainly of Tamil origin, at work in the plantations. Here you will see all the stages of the tea-making process and can also enjoy a cup of pure Celyon tea in the factory.
It is then onto the beautiful village of Kitulgala; with forest-covered hills plunging down to the wild waters of the Kelani Ganga, astounding waterfalls and towering trees, the scenery is particularly dramatic. Kitulgala’s original claim to fame is as the location for David Lean’s 1957 film “Bridge on the River Kwai”. Nowadays, Kitulgala is best known as the site of Sri Lanka’s best white water rafting with grade two and grade three rapids some 5km upriver from the village.
After lunch we then head for the paradise beaches of Koggala. En route we visit the town’s Turtle Hatchery. Kooggala is one of Sri Lanka’s most important breeding spots for the endangered Sea Turtles. The sandy beaches serve as sanctuary for several types of marine turtles including Loggerheads and the Leatherback Turtle. The small turtle hatchery first opened in 1996, in an effort to promote responsible tourism and conservation. The hatchery buys turtle eggs off fishermen, in an attempt to discourage them from poaching and selling the eggs. You will be educated on the importance of protecting turtle life, via the hatchery’s facilities that care for new born turtles until they are ready to be released back into the ocean, an experience that you may even have the opportunity to do yourself first-hand! Continue to hotel.
OVERNIGHT IN KOGGALA
Day 8 KOGGALA
A relatively unknown when it comes to beach escapes, Koggala is authentic, captivating and entirely without guile and location-wise it doesn’t get much better than this. The small coastal town stretches across the south coast of Sri Lanka and has one of the island nation’s longest beaches, where you can explore the reef straight from the beach. A stay here takes your Sri Lanka adventure to an altogether different level, bringing together the exceptional and beautiful in one special paradise.
After breakfast, enjoy a relaxing day at leisure. Your beautiful hotel is set beside the sublime sands and coconut palms of Koggala Beach.Take a walk along the coast to look out for turtles wading in the shallows. Retire to the serenity of the spa for a soothing treatment or lounge beside the outdoor pool and be pampered.
