Ancient ruins and archaeological wonders redolent of the Incan Empire era make this country one of a kind and a firm feature on many holidaymakers’ bucket-lists.

To kick off your tour, you’ll head to Lima, Peru’s capital, and brimming with historical clout in the form of World Heritage Sites and bustling plazas. The Plaza Mayor, Government Palace, and City Hall are just some of the places you’ll visit before making your way to Arequipa.

Located on the southern coast and surrounded by three mighty volcanoes, Arequipa has an abundance of architecture constructed from white volcanic stone, making for some fascinating scenery.

Midway through your trip, you’ll have already rubbed shoulders with indigenous communities, visited Lake Titicaca and sampled succulent Peruvian cookery, and to complete a fantastic getaway, you’ll then have to pay a visit to Cusco, the historical capital of Incan Empire along with Machu Picchu- a world-famous Incan citadel.

Nestled in the southeast of Peru, Cusco is a World Heritage Site and a haven for striking architecture. You’ll be able to feast your eyes on Qoricancha, the famous Sun Temple and elbow your way through crowds at San Pedro Market, spouting a chorus of ‘Cuanto cuesta’s’ – finally putting that senior school Spanish to good use.

Last but certainly not least, you’ll make your way to Machu Picchu, stopping off in Aguas Calientes beforehand to watch the sun’s golden hue bleed over the horizon in the early morning. The 5.30 am start to your day of Machu Picchu exploration (cue plenty of selfie opportunities) is well worth it, as this 15th-century ancient Incan citadel is a historical must-see in a league of its own.
